FAQs
What size folders and hanging folders do I need? Standard Letter size folders and hanging folders.
Do I need this if I already have a will? Short answer: yes — they do different jobs. Your will decides who inherits what after you're gone. The Nokbox handles everything that has to happen before any of that can even start: where the accounts are, who the insurance is with, which keys open what, what the Wi-Fi password is, who to call first. A will tells your family what to do with your stuff. The Nokbox tells them how to actually find it.
What if I already have a file cabinet or a box? The Nokbox Lite is right for you! This kit contains everything in the Original box, except the folders, hanging folders, and box. You get your stack of manila folders, label them with labels we provide, add them to 15 hanging folders, label those with our hanging tabs, and drop a check sheet into each folder.
How long does it take to fill out? However long you want it to. Some people knock it out in a single weekend; others chip away one folder at a time over a few months. There's no right pace, and you don't have to know everything before you start. The checksheets walk you through exactly what to gather and where to put it. Most importantly: you can stop, take a break, and come back to it whenever life gets in the way. (It usually does.)
Is it safe to write down passwords / where should I keep it? Fair question — and yes, it's safe, as long as your Nokbox lives somewhere only trusted people can get to. The zippered Document Protector bag tucked inside your Nokbox is built specifically for the items that need extra security, like passports and birth certificates. Keep that in a secure location such as a home sage. And none of your information is stored online by us. Your Nokbox stays exactly where you put it, and only the people you tell about it know where that is.
Which kit should I buy? The million dollar question! All of our kits contain the same information and work for every household. If you don't have much yet, the Original is a great start. If you have too much paper, we help you eliminate it down to ONE document per category. If you already have folders or a system, select the Nokbox Lite. If you already have a storage box or want your own container, get the Base Kit. The Nokbox Original and Nokbox Fireproof are the Base Kit plus a container. I'm young and healthy — is this only for older people? You don't have to be old (or on your death bed) to put together a Nokbox. In fact, the earlier, the better. If you're just starting out, you may not have a ton to file away yet, but life adds up fast. Having a Nokbox gives you one place to keep and manage all of it, so when it's time to apply for a mortgage, file an insurance claim, or sell your car, the info is right there waiting for you.
It also makes a fantastic wedding or housewarming gift. No matter your age or stage of life, a Nokbox is a great idea.
I'm single / I don't have kids. Is this still for me? Yes, a Nokbox is incredibly valuable for single adults without kids. It ensures that your wishes are carried out exactly as you want, and provides a designated place to organize your daily life, emergency medical information, and your estate
I'm married, do I need two Nokboxes? It really depends on how intermingled your accounts are. We usually suggest starting with one box and seeing what you need from there. Some couples end up buying a second, while others just add a Lite kit for the extra sections.
I don't have a lot of assets. Is The Nokbox overkill? Not at all — The Nokbox isn't about assets. It's about information. Even the simplest life comes with bank logins, insurance policies, utility accounts, medical records, and a phone full of apps. If something happened tomorrow, someone would still have to track all of it down.
If anything, fewer assets is a great reason to start now: your Nokbox will be quicker to fill out and ready to grow with you as life piles on the rest.

I purchased the Nokbox Lite with the intention of adding my own hanging file folders, interior folders, and a fireproof and water resistant document box for safer storage. I did this because I am a very organized person and from the looks of it, the Nokbox system looked better than I had seen so far; I’m always moving up when it comes to organization.
I began by searching through my existing stash of colored hanging file folders, and was actually able to find matches or near matches for each of the colors of each of the category labels! That will help me visually as I work with these files going forward.
But now that I’ve followed the excellent instructions carefully by
1. labeling each hanging file folder in turn, then
2. returning to the first one in line and adding the prescribed labeled interior folders to each hanging folder, then
3. opening the package of sheets to be added to be placed inside of each interior folder in turn, from front to back, the set up couldn’t have been easier.
And I learned something: I’ve come to the pinnacle of organizing this part of my life as far as organizing goes. I will never need to supplant the Nokbox with any of those “What My Family Needs to Know” books to fill in and hope they can find.
Just during completing this setup, my idea that I would have to fill these folders with a lot of stuff has vanished. Those things can stay where they are, for the most part. The Nokbox will either give your next of kin the information they need on the single sheet or it will tell them where to find it. So no overstuffed folders!
When I saw the folder labeled Ancestry I was delighted but thought it would be the exception. No, the single sheet in it is where you can direct your loved ones to the results of your labors of love as the family genealogist, or the work you never really had the time for.
For those irreplaceable or expensive (Have you ordered a birth, marriage, or death certificate lately? Unbelievable!) documents, genealogical or personal/family, the Nokbox comes with one very durable see-through zippered document bag, and you can order more if you need them. The spacious bag fits very nicely in front or in back of the hanging files. The kit also comes with a bag and key tags so they are complete and ready for use when your loved ones need them.
The one thing I would like to see is a place to list my family and close friends but I can add that on a single sheet of plain paper, or I can go through my digital Contacts and add searchable keywords to family; friends could be tagged by how I know them, and leave any important notes so my family knows they should contact Susie since she is an Admin for this Facebook group and Sam because he is an Admin for that Nextdoor group…see, here I am, thinking through things that need to be done, all thanks to my Nokbox! Of course, that points to the fact that getting it set up, while immensely satisfying, is just the start. I’ll likely start from the front, one interior folder at a time, seeking one immensely satisfying feeling, one task at a time, one sheet at a time.
Once you have your Nokbox, you can join a user group on Facebook and find other helps to encourage you along the way.
* The photo I have shows my Nokbox set up in the JHSafer fireproof document box I chose. Besides the superior safety features, including the only fireproof zipper, it holds only letter-sized hanging files. (Many others show folders front-to-back but they are legal-sized; letter-sized only fit if hung sideways so you would have the lid folded out to your side, taking up valuable space on your desk.) I have two irreplaceable family tree books. One of them is full-sized and they both fit easily behind the Nokbox system, with plenty of room to spare. I found both the Nokbox Lite and the JHSafer fireproof document box on Amazon.
The Nokbox Lite has given me the best value for my money, for perfect organization, and for saving my time (and money on lesser products). I could not be happier, more comfortable, more relieved. The same feelings coming with each step and when the process is complete. I have planned two hours a day for the first week, then one hour a day is my goal towards completion. Now it is down in writing and I’ve stated it publicly.

We thought we had what we needed in case of my husband and I passing for our two sons. The NOKBOX made us realized that there are more smaller items that needed to be deal with. The information sheets you provide will help us or anyone in this situation and it's easy to understand as well too ensure your NOK knows what to do during this phrase of your life. We ordered our fire proof/water proof storage box thru Amazon, because we would looking for additional storage sections for additional item's to secure an all in one place for emergencies. Item's such as our spare glasses, prescription medications for seven days, photos CD, thumb drives with information you may need, military ribbons, quick list of contacts, plus any additional items that we felt is needed. We are retired disable Veterans and in case of an emergency we have everything that is important in one centralized location to grab and go. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking to get their things together. Thanks for the creation of the NOKBOX. We like to recommend an easier way for veterans to get a significant discount. I enjoy organizing so Nokbox Lite was fun for me to put together. I already had hanging folders and manilla folders so just purchased a heavy duty hanging file storage container from Staples. I like removable lid so I don't have to fight with attached lid while working in it. I also bought a larger box so our trust notebook will fit inside. I left out folders that didn't pertain to us and used the blank labels to create folders I wanted to add. I thought I had prepared all the information a few years ago. BUT, Nokbox directions let me know all the information I hadn't thought about.; it did a lot of "thinking" for me! I cleaned out a lot of paperwork that isn't needed, emptied two file drawers, and will work out of the Nokbox only to keep it current. Our kids are very grateful we've done this work that will streamline the process for them when that difficult time comes and it feels good to have accomplished this for them.

I’m in my 30s and kept seeing ads for these in Instagram. I thought it looked cool, but didn’t feel it was a necessary purchase. Then, I lost a family member and I knew I wanted to buy one.
